Daniel J Mooney was born and raised in Limerick City. He is a member of Writepace, a writing group of Limerick writers going strong since 2016, and writes as Dan Mooney as well - his debut, Me, Myself and Them, was published in 2017 and won the Luke Bitmead Bursary, and The Great Unexpected followed in 2018 and has been translated into several languages.

The 14th Storm (Legend Press, 2023) is his first speculative novel, a cli-fi thriller set in 2043. The planet is ravaged by violent storms and failing crops, much of the world is uninhabitable, and the Department of Environmental Justice has been tasked with finding and executing those who denied climate change. On the eve of the fourteenth storm season, agents Broderick and Malley are sent to hunt the leader of a stirring rebellion - but Broderick is interested only in revenge, Malley suspects their target is a political inconvenience rather than a criminal, and their journey is upended by Fionnuala, a young idealistic runaway determined to save him.

He has said the book began with a question posed by the climate journalist John Gibbons: what happens when someone decides who is really responsible for climate change?
