Jonathan Swift (1667-1745) was one of the greatest satirists in the English language. Born in Dublin, he became known for his sharp wit and biting commentary on politics, religion, and human nature. His most famous work, "Gulliver’s Travels", combines fantastical voyages with trenchant social critique, while essays like A Modest Proposal demonstrate his mastery of irony. Swift was also deeply involved in the politics of his time, supporting the Tory cause and writing polemical pamphlets. Despite his often cynical tone, he sought to provoke reform and expose hypocrisy. Swift served as Dean of St. Patrick’s Cathedral in Dublin until his death.
