Edward John Moreton Drax Plunkett, 18th Baron of Dunsany (1878-1957), was an Irish aristocrat, writer, and dramatist whose works had a profound influence on fantasy literature. Known simply as Lord Dunsany, he wrote more than eighty books, including short stories, plays, novels, and essays. His richly imaginative tales, often set in invented mythologies and dreamlike worlds, inspired later writers such as J.R.R. Tolkien, H.P. Lovecraft, and Ursula K. Le Guin. The Gods of Pegāna and The King of Elfland’s Daughter are among his most enduring works. Dunsany also served as a soldier and sportsman, balancing his literary career with an active life of service and adventure.
