Senan Mahon is an Irish science fiction author whose writing blends hard science fiction and space opera. He lives in a small town on Ireland's south coast, where the Atlantic storms unleash their fury against a rugged coast of cliffs and sea-stacks.
He has lived his whole life in Ireland and spent his career as a software developer, from which he is now retired. Science and science fiction have been lifelong passions since his teenage years, when an uncle gave him a copy of James Burke's Connections.
His first book came out of the 2020 Covid lockdown. Consequential, a novella about an Irish NASA astronaut marooned on the International Space Station who must find a way home and a way to solve a global crisis caused by the aftermath of a pandemic, was published that year. Its reception encouraged him to attempt something larger.
That became The Blue Race, the first book of The Gelvan Saga, a galaxy-spanning space opera in which a fragile 200-year truce between humanity and the Engus is threatened by ancient alien technology, and a pair of telepathic siblings from an almost extinct race find themselves leading the race to reach it. The Arithmetic of Echoes followed as book two, leaning further into hard science fiction, with the discovery of a cosmos-spanning M-drive risking the attention of something old and patient that listens for echoes in the dark.
When he is not writing, he co-hosts an Irish science podcast called Enough, with the science!
